On 8 October 2026, we were invited to attend the launch of the Xiaomi REDMI Note 17 Series at the Four Seasons Hotel in Johannesburg. And listen, if there is one thing we can appreciate, it is a little luxury.

The hotel was absolutely gorgeous. Luxurious is an understatement. We were welcomed with drinks as we walked in, immediately setting the tone for what promised to be an exciting evening. After registering at the booth, we received our goodie bags before making our way into the venue and mingling with fellow guests.

Now, if you follow us on TikTok (@the016magazine), you may have already seen what was inside our goodie bags. But for those who missed it, allow us to fill you in.

We received a Xiaomi smartwatch and a power bank, and let us just say that we have been putting them to the test. There is something satisfying about receiving a gadget and discovering how it fits into your everyday life. We will be sharing more of our experience with these devices, so keep an eye on our social media pages.

But back to the launch.

The evening opened with a beautiful violin performance, adding a touch of sophistication to the occasion before Xiaomi's management took to the stage to deliver their speeches. The atmosphere was polished, the hospitality was on point, and the excitement was building. We were there for one reason: to see what Xiaomi had been working on.

Meet the REDMI Note 17 Series

The spotlight was on the REDMI Note 17 Series, with Xiaomi showcasing smartphones designed around performance, battery life, display quality and durability.

One of the standout features announced for the range was its focus on keeping up with the demands of everyday life. Whether you are a content creator constantly capturing footage, a student juggling assignments, or someone whose phone practically lives in their hand, battery life and reliable performance matter.

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G particularly caught our attention with its headline 10,000mAh battery and 100W HyperCharge technology. That is a substantial battery capacity for a smartphone, paired with fast-charging capabilities designed to get users back to their day sooner. Xiaomi also highlighted a 6.83-inch 1.5K CrystalRes AMOLED display, offering a large screen for watching videos, browsing social media and viewing content.

Durability was another major talking point. Xiaomi promotes the Pro Max with IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K dust and water-resistance ratings, alongside certified drop resistance under specified laboratory testing conditions. These features are designed to offer additional protection.

The design also had its moment. Xiaomi highlighted a colour finish called Cloud Blush, featuring photochromic technology that changes in appearance when exposed to sunlight. It is a detail that adds a little personality to a device, particularly for users who appreciate technology that looks as good as it performs.

Of course, the Pro Max was not the only device in the spotlight. The REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G was also presented as an option for users looking for a premium-style display and a balance of performance and battery life. The standard REDMI Note 17 5G rounds out the lineup, giving consumers another option within the series.

More than just a smartphone launch

What stood out about the evening was the way technology was presented as part of everyday living. Smartphones are no longer simply devices for making calls and sending messages. They are our cameras, editing tools, entertainment centres, navigation systems and, for many of us working in media, essential tools of the trade.

A phone that can capture quality images, keep up with a demanding schedule and support the way we create and consume content is more than a gadget; it is a tool.

The launch gave us an opportunity to experience Xiaomi's presentation first-hand, connect with fellow guests and get a closer look at the company's latest offerings.

And yes, we are still talking about those goodie bags!

So, how much will they cost?

Let’s talk numbers, because we know that impressive specifications are one thing, but the price tag matters just as much.

The REDMI Note 17 Series became available in South Africa from 9 October 2026, with three models catering to different preferences and budgets.

Here’s the breakdown:

REDMI Note 17 5G — R9,999

REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G — R12,999

REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G — R15,999

The standard REDMI Note 17 5G comes with a 7,700mAh battery and 45W fast charging, while the Pro model steps things up with an 8,340mAh battery and 67W HyperCharge.

For those looking for the top-end model, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G features a 10,000mAh battery and 100W wired HyperCharge, making battery capacity one of the biggest talking points of the range.

With prices starting at R9,999, Xiaomi is positioning the series in South Africa’s competitive smartphone market. Whether you are upgrading your current phone or shopping for a device that can keep up with your daily routine, the range offers three options to consider.

The devices were announced as available from 9 October, although stock and availability may vary between retailers.

We are looking forward to spending more time with the devices and sharing our hands-on experiences with you. Because at The016 Magazine, we do not just want to tell you what is new. We want to explore what it means for you, too.
