Bosch is marking 120 years in South Africa, celebrating more than a century of technological development, local manufacturing and investment in skills and communities.

The global technology and services company first established its presence in South Africa in 1906, making the country one of its earliest international markets. Over the years, that initial presence has grown into a local operation employing more than 1,300 people across more than 20 locations.

According to Bosch, the company generated approximately R6.9 billion in sales in South Africa in 2025, equivalent to €352 million. Its local footprint includes manufacturing operations in Brits, North West, where electromechanical automotive components such as starter motors, wiper systems and brake callipers are produced.

The milestone also coincides with another significant anniversary within the company. Bosch Rexroth South Africa is celebrating 60 years in 2026, marking six decades of work in engineering, hydraulics and automation.

Based in Kempton Park, Gauteng, the Bosch Rexroth HUBB brings together production, assembly and training while providing specialised services for industrial equipment. The facility also manufactures and customises hydraulic and pneumatic systems for demanding environments across the African continent.

From 1906 to a local manufacturing footprint

Bosch’s South African story began shortly after the company was founded in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1886. The company established its South African presence in 1906 before formally establishing Robert Bosch (Pty) Ltd in 1965.

Since then, Bosch has expanded into sectors including industrial technology, consumer goods, building and energy solutions, while establishing operations in cities including Midrand, Durban and Cape Town.

One of the company’s notable local developments is the Brits manufacturing facility. The site has also played a role in developing technology for the global Bosch business.

In 2023, the first version of the Bosch Asset Tracker was developed at the Brits site. Now known as ASTRA, the technology was designed to help businesses improve the visibility, security and management of valuable assets. Its applications include logistics, mining, automotive and agriculture.

Investing in skills and people

Beyond manufacturing and technology, Bosch says its contribution to South Africa also includes investment in education, training and local suppliers.

Over the past decade, the company says it has provided training and development opportunities to approximately 1,000 people through programmes including the YES for Youth initiative, Work Integrated Learning, apprenticeships and its Graduate Development Programme.

Dr Markus Thill, president with responsibility for the Africa region, said the company’s 120-year presence reflects its long-term relationship with the country.

“Our 120-year journey in South Africa is a testament to enduring partnership and our unwavering belief in the country’s potential.”

Thill said Bosch remained committed to innovation and sustainable growth in the years ahead.

Aras Tscharkhoscht, chief executive officer of Robert Bosch (Pty) Ltd and representative of Bosch in South Africa, also acknowledged the role of South African communities in the company’s journey.

He said Bosch was looking forward to continuing its partnership with the country and contributing to its future.

Looking towards the future

As Bosch looks beyond its 120-year milestone, the company says its focus in South Africa includes sustainable mobility, energy efficiency and digital transformation.

The company is also exploring opportunities linked to the hydrogen economy, including technologies across the energy supply chain that could contribute to the development of a local energy ecosystem.

For Bosch, the anniversary represents not only a look back at its history in South Africa, but also an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to local talent, manufacturing and technological development.

After 120 years, the company says it intends to continue investing in South Africa’s future while contributing to a more technologically advanced and sustainable economy.
